We lived a Loch Lomand life,
of summers in pebbled beaches
and gaudy shorts,
haloed in the subtle Scottish sun.
My ma with her flat cap
like a trawlerman barking
"Suncream! Sandwiches! Silence!"
at my brother and myself,
the begrudging deckhands.
The pines of the shore
spoke of the dangers of
the blind depths before them.
But the old blue lapped at our knees
despite the warnings.
The cold took my lungs
and curved my shoulders
into sailboat servitude.
But it washed through too;
my mind and curs'ed thoughts
stockpiled by Winter
were brought to clarity.
In amongst the minnows
with my feet slowly melting
into the rocky sands
I could finally breath in
the lush air of Scotland
in bloom.
