there’s a rink in winter but
the neighborhood takes the
seats in summer
They had a boys’ team in the
men’s league years ago and
nearly took the title
He was cycling past and
thought he’d watch the game
It was a girls’ league, age 13
The catcher was slim with thin
legs and her shin pads kept
unbuckling on her
But she kept her right hand
behind her back, catching
the ball off each missed swing
And flicked her wrist in a
perfect toss back to the
pitcher each time
