There He Was...

I went to the local antiques stores,
just browsing, as I do usually,
when I saw this old, handmade
teddy bear, just sitting in this chair.

It was very old, made of brown wool-cloth,
and had quite a few moth holes on him.
I don't know what it was, but the feeling
struck me that he needed to be loved.

You could tell this old teddy bear
had been lovingly handmade, perhaps
by someone's mother or grandmother.
I felt empathy for this bear...

Made with love, once loved, then rejected-
now sitting there in a rocking chair
of an antique store, waiting to be loved
and love someone again...

I couldn't shake that feeling, so I bought
him and took him home with me, despite my
age of 25 and my determination to have no
toys in my room (a sign of immaturity to me).

He has become very dear to me, being there
always when I needed to hug (which my scotty
dog is not too keen on) and radiating love.
He's a very special bear to me.

I named him Thingol, after an elf-king in
Tolkien's "Simarillion" and to this day I
don't know why I picked that name, but it
stuck...and I don't even know what it means.

Author notes

I just found out that Thingol means Greycloacked; I love LOTR and Tolkien's writes.
Perhaps it was being in an antique shop, greycloacked could be equated to 'dust covered'...I don't know. He wasn't dusty when I found him.

sounds to me like the love of the velvatine rabbit. you were his rescuing fairy. I have a teddy bear to this day. I've had him since I was 5. his name is chocolate, and he has been shaved, and he's missing one eye, but he knows I love him all the same. He's been to every major medical operation I've ever had. Thanks for sharing your feelings and reminding us of ours. UNT

*smiles* we all need something to love, be it a dog, a cow, a worn out teddy bear that has seen a million tears before we ever come upon him. He looks like a bear you would want to pick up and squeeze just to see how soft or hard he is, and his fur looks like it could soak up the sorrows of a dozen lifetimes. Beautiful peice and I love the bear

Aw, like this story poem, it reminds me of the transcience of our childhood relationships. I know exactly what you mean when you hit a certain age and determine not to indulge in childish objects but there are times when we cannot resist and I'm sure Thingol proved irresistable. Thanks for sharing.

    Nostalgic

This poem reminds us not only that a teddy bear still needs lovin years later, but we still need to hug one. I'm not one for poetry about objects but this one captures the essence a teddy bear possesses and how powerful the presence of a certain one can be on a person
