Dancing Alone

Dancing alone.
So liberating,
Yet so violating.
Freedom
Expression
Or loneliness?
If I twirl around long enough,
If I hold my hands high enough,
Will I forget it’s just me?
If I move wildly enough,
If my hips gyrate enough,
Will I finally exhaust my mind
As well as my body?
If I hold my hands in front of me,
Can I imagine someone’s there?
I could place a phantom in my empty arms.
Shift, shift, shift,
Spinning slowly,
Ever moving, ever changing.
Close my eyes…and someone’s there.
Do I need a specter,
Or am I enough?

Author notes

Prompt: Dance. Slow-dancing alone at Prom is one of life's most interesting moments, I think, and one of the primary thoughts behind this poem.

    Wow

This is amazing. I can't believe this didn't place! You've perfectly recreated this feeling and moment, so that even those who haven't danced alone in such a way can be brought into the scene.
    Well penned.

    why a specter?

I think your guardian angel would be glad to step in

Heh, a specter because they're not really there, no matter how much you imagine. And my "guardian angel" at the time would have been more than happy to have stepped in, but unfortunately, my high school doesn't let freshmen into the Prom, so he couldn't attend. This poem was all about the conflict between the liberation of expressing yourself by dancing by yourself and the loneliness of dancing alone. ^_^
