The summer before kindergarten
Is the first time I lost a friend
Sarah Brown, preschool playmate,
Moving-- how can I comprehend?
We did so many things together
Like ballet (before I quit),
How could I imagine this--
Who'd 'a thought our roads would split?
Anyhow, that's what they did
So I gave her a parting gift
Something that I knew she'd like
To remember me across the rift.
A cup of sunflower seeds
From Sweet Tomatoes-- how naive!
And yet, I thought it was wise,
On that lonely Christmas Eve.
She claimed she'd eat one every day
And think of me each time
And even if she has forgotten
I've kept a promise of mine
I pick a seed
And see her face
And remember
Our last embrace.

Author notes
Not too good rhyme... Anyhow, yeah, it's basically true. She moved to San Diego. Well, I made a new friend, and kept that one for three years, then made three more friends, who I still have (it's been three more years) plus others.

this is just great. What a sweet, sad story. I had a friend, Annie Clancy and I was the one that had to move. We promised to always write ... and we did for awhile. My life was filled with turmoil and I moved a lot. We lost touch but I think of her often. Thank you for entering.

Aw. It's always sad when a good friend moves. But its also nice to make new ones. The rhyme was kind of awkward sometimes, but it all works out. Thanks for entering and good luck in the contest!

I have experienced the loss of a friend a few times, but I agree, the loss of the first best friend will always be the hardest....in my opinion. I have a 3 best friends now, and have had them each for 8 years! I'm incredibly lucky i think. llol I loved your poem though, keep up the good work.

Wow. I think the rhyme works out just fine. I had several experiences like that. My family used to live in an appartment complex and I had about seven friends there and I think by the time we finally moved somewhere else six of them had already left. Its nice to know that the two of you had things to remember each other by though. Good poem!
