My Hero

He was my hero

The man who carried me
down the lighthouse steps

not up, because I was frightened;

I was three years old

and he was my hero

The shy man
my girlfriends giggled about
and embarrassed
whenever they could;

I was a teenager

and he was still my hero

The handsome man
who gave his little girl away
to another man for life;

I was a young woman

he was always my hero

The man who broke my heart
as he lay in a hospital bed
not looking like my hero anymore

just the man I called ‘Dad’
and he died shortly after;

I am his daughter

and he will forever be

my hero

    Sue,

    No words needed here, nothing I could ever say would render this justice. You are a child, a girl, a woman, a daughter and a mighty fine poet.

      Thank you for your most welcome comment, my Dad was all those things and a friend, but mostly he was my hero

    Your poem is loving, cheerful,
    But also made me sad.
    I wonder how my life would be
    If I had had your dad.

    I never would have run away
    Or fight not being mean
    Perhaps I could have been a King
    Like you became a Queen

    You show good fathers do exist
    I'm bitter-sweet, but glad
    I wonder how my life would be
    If I had had your dad.

      Many thanks for your words, I'm just sorry that you didn't have my Dad as well, I think he would have liked a son, but he just had two daughters and he gave us a stable home life with Mum.

  • Sue, this is perfect. As a father, I cannot imagine any words said better than these by a daughter. The love you have for the man shines through.

      Many thanks Mike, my only regret is that maybe I didn't tell him often enough when he was alive just how much I loved him and I wasn't writing poetry then so I couldn't show him, but I think he knew

    I am very glad your father was your hero. A father should always be strong arms and a soft place to fall. My own father was neither when he died I never shed a tear nor did my siblings

    I am so glad for you your father was always your hero

      Many thanks Pat, I will always feel blessed that I had a Dad who was everything and more, he had his bad points, but then he was only human after all.

    prof. mes/rectifies/yer verse

    Imagine there is a type whom
    You could call the shy man without condom
    Whose girlfriends giggled about-what is up to them?-
    And embarrassed him with classical brainless theme
    Whenever they could!
    I was then a teenager yet not cold.

    Bless,
    prof. Mes

    First dear Sue, this made me cried,
    for the love and pain pen into it.

    Then, my heart lifted a bit, for
    this is a wonderful tribute to your father
    from a loving daughter...

    Blessing to you.

    On the shoulders of a giant man
    Who ruled the moon and sky
    You knew that you were all his plan
    The apple of his eye
    It didn't ever matter that he wasn't other's god
    He always keep his love for little you
    The way that life will then turn out
    Is always very odd
    We never know the sort of things we'll do
    But blimey if he saw you now
    And read the words you write
    He'd dance the sky (though God knows how)
    And celebrate all night
