Special

I wake up in the morning
feeling very normal
Why when i walk outside
do faces turn and stare

Looking through
eyes that i feel are normal
smiling all day long
as they all watch my every move

When I look in the mirror
why do i look different than you?
Momma why did God make me differently?
She tells me, he blessed you
gave you a little more than others

Many questions come to my mind
I'm more than normal
I'm special
I'm looking through down syndrome eyes

Author notes

I was inspired to write this poem because my daughter's birthday is coming up in august and we thought she was gonna be down syndrome and she isn't and ever since that came up in my life i look at things a little different, appreciate a little more!

And doing so with far more grace and charm than I do anything. Thank you for the reminder that we each need to rise to our own " special" ,whatever that might be in each of us. An inspiring poem, well-written. =)

Wow! That's about all I can say. This was AMAZING! I hate how people stare at the ones who are "different" but really they are like you and I just with a different place in life. Actually a little boy probably about 8-10 years old came into our gas station yesterday to pay for his parents gas. He had down syndrome but he was the cutes and sweetest little kid. I hate when people discriminate and poke fun at others! Again this pieces was very good!

    Beautifully Brilliant!!

Nicole you did it again. You did it again! I'm just in awe. You are so talented, and this is SO tenderly beautiful! The conclusion could not be any more perfect. God bless the day you commented on one of my poems, and added me as a fav!

    Thank you for this!

  • This is really amazing. I think that this piece could go very far. I can see it being a poster for a foundation of some sort. Honestly. I'm glad that you have shifted viewpoints, I just wish that everyone could, and it didn't take such a huge change of lifestyle to make the world see differently.
    Good Write!!!

Beautiful I love when others write from a point of veiw and create a beautiful image of the world around them instead of twisting it to appear as a set back. The poetry was beautiful

    Oh child,
    this was so touching.
I am so happy that it all worked out for your wee one.
This was written with such understanding that different can never be wrong.
What a wonderful world this would be lass.....
if we just all accepted one another the way God made us.
I am so happy you read my work..otherwise i would have not had an opportunity to meet such a fine writer.
This was written by a lass that has an abundant heart and unyielding bravery for the challenge that you were more then willing to face.
You must be a very very special person.
It is an honor to meet you.

    KEEP ON PUSHIN,
    STRAIGHT AHEAD.

This is a great poem - it really packs a punch. I love 'I'm more than normal, I'm special' such a positive way of looking at a situation that can seem only negative. But as anyone who has had much to do with these children knows, they are more than special, and teach us a lot about love.

    Great Poem

Very beautiful poem! I like it. It's got a very good message. Those little words that will make you feel good are precious and you will remember them for the rest of life. They really give you strength to live life in a true sense. This actually relates me in a number of ways. Great Poem!!!!!

    Nice one !

If I am not too late, then just wish your daughter many many returns of the day from me and in case, I am late then Belated happy birthday. I am sure your daughter will be special as she got you, the angle mother. I don't know much about poems but I like to read and try to write, as it is all about feelings.

You have simple flow of words, which I like the most. I would like to read more of your poems, take care.
