The Real Story of the Class of 2008

Graduation we were full of dreams and hope.
We were going to change the world and make it better.
We were going to move away and start anew.
We were going to break the cycles of this town.

The new school year is now starting,
for me its not high school anymore but college instead.
Most of the 470 studends in my senior class,
not even half are moving on with their lives.

The girl down the street, whom i grew up with,
she's now having sex with her boyfriend when no one's home.
I know its only a matter of time before she has to get married
because she got pregnant by him a few months earlier.

The football star is now trying to make ends meet,
I guess his fmaily can't afford anything anymore.
The head cheerleader now has a kid by someone she doesn't know.
They never learned who the father was from the party at Graduation.

The band member of everyone's favorite band died,
rumor has it couldn't live his life and over dosed on something.
Some say he just got tired and moved away.
No one really knows what happened to him.

The guy who was going to be a big shot cop,
he's now having second thoughts on being his dream.
The boy's too caught up in the past to make it in the now.
Some say he's too immature to make it in the real world.

The writer writing this is struggling too,
for she isn't going unscathed completely.
She's fighting to stay afloat in a world of modern ways
with an art that's thousands of years old.

The real story of the class of 2008,
is that reality has set in for the young minds.
Dreams are lost and given up in replacement of settling for less.
Some have given up completely.

What happened to us changing the world?
What about early retirement when we're 30?
Did that one girl ever get the job she wanted?
So many questions and still no answers for the class of 2008.

Author notes

i'm a recent high school graduate of the class of 2008. i took what i've seen in the recent months of graduating and took the song by the offspring's song (as the contest said to).

to me this is what the song means or says to me. the song really does ring true in my life right now and lets hope that i don't become one of the people the song or i have described in the poem. i never want to let go of my dreams and settle for less in life, because i know i can do better than were i'm at now in life.

It reminds me of all those people who had made fun of me in public school.. most of them are bigger losers than i used to be. heh. Keep writing!
