On a forbidding, caliginous night,
The nails are hammered down
A doctor murmurs vexatious words
Cabalistic, obscure words
Yet his meaning is clear.
She is gone, O Celastrina
Loved for her blithe spirit
One could almost see
the incandescent halo
Dangling above cascading ebony hair.
Poor wretch is her father now
His love for her was abysmal
And he becomes a peccant reprobate
Iniquitious, without compunction
A man who feeds on bitterness.
A shard of light flickers through glass
Caressing the lumberman's face
His daughter, O Celastrina
She is near
She is watching.
Under her careful eye he works
Each day bringing home a meal
Earned by the sweat on his back
The sweat of honest work
The sweat of a man who has returned.
And one day, he will be gone
And no one will remember
But he shall be standing with his daughter
Righteous dirt on his brow
And he will laugh...
He will say, "O Celastrina,"
And they will embrace.
