I think of sitting down by the lake
and it only makes me smile
There was something about the way
you held my hand and moved it through your fingers
or the way you looked at me
as if i was the only one around.
But there were children in the background
and cars on the road beyond us.
Your gaze never left mine
and i was so close to falling
head first into the depths of your heart.
But when you spoke
everything i just felt was taken from focus
and thrown into the water
sitting still around the dock below us.
My feet grazed the stillness
causing a rippling effect.
You told me that someday
we'd make it alright
but tomorrow you'd be leaving home.
You had so much going on in your life.
A uniform to wear
and a line of courage and bravery
written over your face.
You didn't know if the day at the airport
would be the last time you'd ever see me.
Tears would escape my eyes
and you knew they would
you'd be strong for both of us
as you slowly slipped away.
You promised me everything would soon be okay
you assured me you'd be home
when your year to serve came to a close.
But if anything ever happened to you[God Forbid]
you'd be watching from above
you wanted to be sure i knew
you would regret nothing
[soldiers sleep in peace]
and you heart was always mine.
You left me with a final kiss
in the middle of that airport terminal.
Your silent tears mixing with mine.
Metal was closed into my hand
as you slipped me your dog tags
and you slowly pulled away from me.
'Iloveyou' you spoke
and you turned before i could say
anything in return.
The water ripples as the wind breaks over the surface.
My feet hang over the edge
of that all too familair dock.
And in spirit you sit beside me.
I can feel it in the way my hair lifts from my neck
and the way my body relaxes
when only you'd be around.
Your dog tags swing at my neck
along with the engagement ring
you'd given me in those final fleeting moments.
I can hear your voice whisper through the trees
I think of our last day together
sitting side by side[completely in love]
and it only makes me smile.

My friend started writing this poem about her boyfriend whos in the military and then she gave up on it and told me to do something with it.
So i took the idea, my own feeling, and the love i have for him and came up with this.
