So many years wasted trying
to sort out who was to blame.
Acid words degenerated our lips
and left a deposit on our hearts.
Perhaps we should have coated life
with thickly honeyed oblivion,
for sometimes it is unwise to share truth.
In the end,
the unyielding temptation to be honest has worn me
to a thin, translucent leaf of parchment.
My skin peels away like an onion’s—
I no longer have the energy to pretend
or to fight.
I wear my bruised feelings like a party hat
celebrating my bitterness in plain sight.
