Then Came You

Drowning in the muck and mire
Of long lost battles,
I thought I'd never be able to let go.
I just knew I wouldn't make it out alive.

Then came you as I was balancing on a highwire,
Strapped in for the ride in life's many saddles.
You took me in and sheltered me from my foe
And in your wisdom, knowledge, and love I could thrive.

Misunderstood, you and I could be seen as several things,
But as my mentor and friend, you just stayed with me.
There were times we'd laugh and times we'd cry,
But all the joy and sadness was worth it to be with you.

And the very thought of you being gone, like a bell that constantly rings.
I had hoped that one day you'd be able to see
Just how much of a good person you made me, but in one single sigh,
You left us behind without ever having a clue

As to how much we really cared.
Time, the unforgivable bandit, has a way of knocking us off our feet.
And as we walk without your warmth and calmness in our presence,
It's becoming harder from us to move on.

But I know that in my heart, I'm no longer scared.
You helped me see the world clearly once again. You helped me find my seat
Among those who love me. Though you aren't here, I feel your essence
Of love and devotion, and I'm sure to see you again. And that helps me carry on.

Author notes

I know what it's like to lose the one you love. The ones I lost were my guardian angels and children in a sense, but if you believe you'll see them again, I find it easier to cope. We may not share the same beliefs, but we share the love and devotion to those we loved and lost. Best wishes to the family and yourself.
