It was just my luck
when I watched my father
pretend to put a bee
down the back of my mothers shirt.
The way she jumped up and down
and the way they both laughed
from the thrill of the joke.
They chuckled about it all night.
So when I found a wasp at school
half dead in a window cell
I picked it up by a wing
and took it to class.
Then saw sweet Sally Strothers
The girl I loved.
I thought of laugher
So I put it down her shirt.
Of course the wasp came alive
and stung her three times
When I came out of the corner
my nose was red and pointy
and Sally glared at me
until we graduated
eleven years later.
I learned that day
that sometimes my father’s humor
was not such a good idea.
