I gave up long ago,
my yearning for the gold.
Actually, I never had one
truth be told.
I never was bad meat
or one to compete,
so i learned young
about defeat.
A life time spent
has certainly lent
to enhance my ability
to take punishment...
If you think that my views
are a bit off or askew
please be gentle with me
I'm not a gold-getter like you.

I liked your rhyme scheme here. I also like the message.
Very well done
