1st

At a time in my life that I thought I knew myself and everything I wanted, I met you.
Sometimes I look back and smile, realizing that from that moment on,
I would begin a journey of growth and realizing what I thought I knew was wrong.



You looked at me and saw me, not my shield, not my front,
for the 1st time I felt fully exposed.

Sitting on a bench talking to you outside of work,
The 1st time I had a real conversation with a guy.

Wanted you to fall so I could let myself fall too,
The 1st one to make me question myself.

Over a few months I considered you my friend,
The 1st one I could count on when all else failed.

Reading through books of poetry,
It was the 1st time I realized there was more to you than what meets the eye.

Becoming lost in the poetry not the poet,
I realized poetry was a gift for the 1st time.

The day you called me to tell me you had a child on the way,
While I sat thinking no you have two, the 1st time I was unsure of you.

As you told me there was no me and you,
I truly hated a man for the 1st time.

Having our daughter, not involving you,
The very 1st time I ever robbed someone.

The day I received your reply to my email,
That was the 1st time I ever felt truly scared.

Not scared of you or your reaction,
But scared of the realization that I still cared for you.

When you met your daughter for her birthday,
Leaving that day was the 1st time my soul felt at ease.

Sometimes I believe all the occurred on 6-1-07 was fate,
It was the 1st time I felt carried by someone else.

Your understanding was the 1st time someone showed me compassion.
You were the first guy to ever get me something for my birthday.

And in 08’ I’ve become a better person, a better mother and a better friend.
For the 1st time I owe my achievement to another.

Every time you make love to me,
It always seems like the very 1st time.

Everyday I see you I feel it is the 1st of many to come.
The 1st kiss of each day I see you takes my breath away.
You are the 1st person I think of when I wake each day.
The 1st man I have ever truly loved and knew why.

The 1st are unending between you and me.
Too long to put down,
And for the 1st time I am going to keep some things to myself.







You truly have inspired me to excel in all I do.  You have taught me grace and forgiveness.  I know now I am not owed anything and life is simply that, life.  Thank you for being here with me, most importantly for being my friend.  And everyday for the rest of my life regardless of what happens between you and me, I will always be truly grateful for every second I got to spend with you.  I realize we are never promised tomorrow on Earth or with someone we love.  So for every second I do have you I promise to cherish you and respect you.  I love you.
