We Loved

We loved in secret, stealing moments
Fingers entwined underneath tables
Passionate kisses under the stars
Never letting on to the joy in our souls

We loved with sensuality, savoring moments

We loved with heart, sharing moments
Trading secrets like baseball cards
Holding on to each as if it were a commodity
Living and loving together, unconditionally

We loved with truth and hope

We loved with faith, in each other and ourselves
Promising to hold each other together
To always remember the faith;
that September brought

    The use of past tense

    in this piece gives it a haunting quality and a wistfulness that is beautiful in its yearning. It's a familiar refrain I know well.

    I could sure use some of that super glue about now.
