Cool running

It was the hottest part of the summer, and our church’s air conditioning had not been working for some weeks.  The afternoon congregation wore their lightest clothing, and infants and very young children wore as little as possible.  Programs and bulletins were glanced at and promptly folded into paper fans.  Open doors into both foyers invited nonexistent breezes to the gathering.

A grandfatherly church dignitary visited unexpectedly, and was invited to address us.

One of our young mothers opted to change her very active toddler’s wet diaper in a quiet corner of the empty foyer.  There, a loudspeaker connected to the chapel microphone allowed her to listen in on this inspiring man’s sermon.

Her little fellow made a lightning-quick getaway, wearing only his blonde curls.  He sped in cherubic glory up one chapel aisle and across the open space in front of the pulpit before charging down the opposite aisle.

A brief, stunned silence followed.  It was shortly replaced with an unsuccessfully stifled wave of laughter.  Grinning broadly, our guest speaker leaned into the microphone and deeply intoned, “Bishop, your air conditioning WILL be fixed by next Sunday!  Won’t it?”

It was!

    Hoodwinked

What a charming tale, and what a resolution to the sermon that was. I hope they enjoy the new air conditioning!

Wish I could remember it...the 'triumphal entry' stole the show!

Great story. Funny and true. I love it. Nothing is quite so funny as those little incidents that happen in what we consider sacred settings.

Wonderful, this is hilarious! You should send this in to a magazine for publication. Seriously!

  • Excellent! I LOVE it!!!

  • Oh, this is delightful. I loved all the heavenly imagery. Poor little cherub. He has no idea he has been recorded so! I'm sure he will hear the story many times though has he grows.

Wonderful, captivating storytelling. Excellent use of detail and suspense. You did a great job building up to his triumphal entry!

    Well done!
