A Hero Falls Apart

three days of practicing my practice;

"dear, how can I help you , now?

the Fema buses should arrive soon."

two days after that, no sleep,

empty room, all antibiotics given to those in need,

smell of dead and rot infusing nasal orifice;

"doctors DO CRY AND CRACK!"

frozen tears flood ---

Author notes

50 words
alone, cold, tired and ......in need!
This poem is a dedication to a doctor, who for 5 days endured conditions from the impact of Katrina, that was never showed to the public. I know I would never have had the strength to survive as he did. A book is in the making and will be turned into a movie. I thank God today, that I was spared the details until now, or I might have cracked up! To all 20 doctors who endured ALMOST the same, you should receive a medal of honor, but our government would never own up to as many mistakes as they made. We only heard of a few, selected for a viewing audience. The rest was so horrid, that I cried all through the book. Not one of their patients died, due to their 5 day care without any sleep. A MIRACLE!!!!!

    Amazing dedication! Congrats for acknowledging this that the government has ignored, as they have ignored many other things.

      This true story is about my son and the horrors as a doctor he experienced. 3 agents loved the book, but because our government found out, they were afraid to touch it! Hollywood wanted to turn it into a movie. If they have the power to get him an agent, then the book will be published and the movie made. I cried so hard when I read the book. MY sons hid all the gruesome details from me at the time. Thank God for protective, loving sons!

      Thanks bro, for the opportunity to express myself in your contest. MY son is one of the doctors I was talking about. I never really knew how close to dying he really was, until he sent me his book. He was one of 2 doctors who headed the Mash team, and struggled through unimaginable things, that we never heard through the media. I have since learned that many things screwed up by our own government, made the lives of those who lived there, and those who helped much worse than it needed to be.

    Doctors can be counted among the thousands of heroes who responded to the crisis of Katrina out of compassion for their fellow human beings. However the government response or lack thereof was predicated on cronyism and the vote. Good luck in the contest.

    Sincerely,

    Doctors never get the credit they deserve on a daily basis let alone under the most extreme of circumstances. Well written!

    Admiring your poem and the heart that went into the message. Yes, we should all thank a doctor and stop complaining about the medical community.

    Thought provoking

  • Doctors and nurses seem to know how to step up to the line when they are needed. A life's work that is rarely given recognition. It is just assumed that they will do it. Many governments turn their backs on the work that these dedicated men and women do, not just in a crisis like Katrina. Your piece shows the stark reality of this. Juls
