Cougar Fire

Years roll like dolphins
comforting ball, arms and legs fetal-wrapped close
every part of me at arms' reach
Heart at arm's length.

Inside out
decision made by many, better to live alone
than share an innocent secret
with some other indiscreet tongue.

Turn around twice, thrice,
soften the down for a secure nest, then
Welcome you all in,
the coffee's on.

I have made of this place
the warmest world filled with love
waiting to be the perfect helpmate
upon your return from battle.

I can be a good wife
and I pray for guidance to hold my temper
and hold the course
from the passenger seat.

The knowing of much
a welcome burden to a quick mind
The knowing that had we always been in charge
Peace would reign.

I can be a good wife
and I pray for guidance to hold my temper
    and hold the course
    from the passenger seat

This whole poem was so beautifully written. Also thanks for the comment of my poem. I really appreciated it.

"I pray for guidance to hold my temper
    and hold the course
from the passenger seat." others have spoken about these lines too. Great in my opinion! hard to do sometimes. It's so easy to back seat drive.

Your first three stanzas are wonderfully descriptive.

I pray for guidance to hold my temper
    and hold the course
    from the passenger seat.

    Love these ‘passenger seat’ lines.

Thanks so much for your entry.

I feel the passing of years from your words...and my favorite lines are the last two, "The knowing that, had we always been in charge, peace would reign."...It is a comforting thought and a hopeful one...Great job, best wishes in the contest. Peace, Rhonda

For me the first line dosen't fit the rest of the poem

Loved the "Coffee" phrase and the "passenger seat" phrase!
