“Interesting reading, but not germane…”

We the people so begins the supreme law of our lands.
We started off in unity pledged to the common good.
How did we go astray from the standards it demands?
Why did we deviate from the rights for which it stood?

We started with a vision of how we could be great,
and in the intervening years, as our country’s grown,
that vision was our compass, we’ve steered a course that’s straight,
and held those concepts sacrosanct as new seeds were sown.

The Bill of Rights was added to enhance, not supersede
the solidarity of purpose that’s been at our core.
These are our basic freedoms, the bedrock of our creed
which generations have defended thru indifference and war.

But now the threat is closer and increasingly insidious
It is a poison spread by those that we should trust.
It’s an unnamed dread that’s been planted deep within us
that fosters fear and intolerance no matter how unjust.

Nine eleven, mass destruction, playing to our fears,
by those who have no concept of what is truly just,
have eroded all this nation has stood for o’er the years
ignoring we were built upon “In God We Trust”.

The intentions of a perfect union seem to have been lost
to divisions of politics, religion, and the color of our skin.
They have become ascendant but can we afford the cost:
Destruction of the founder’s dream -
                                                One People
                                                                “American.”

    Very well written

I have been learning the hard way that speaking my mind politically seems to always find conflict from someone somewhere in someway and I WONDER IF IT IS WORTH IT but then I feel it has its importance too. Someone has to stir people to consider thigs and how they are and your poem does that Good write thanks for entering and good luck in the contest
