The girl on the cover is so thin...
Maybe I should go on a diet...
(sigh)
Life styles of the rich and the famous
Revolve around fashion trends and anorexic chic
Where every girl wants to look like Barbie and Paris Hilton
What is this work coming to?!
The other day a five year old girl asks me for a diet coke,
She said she needed to "Watch her figure"
I looked at her mother and all she could say was
"Kids say the darnedest things"
And then walked away.
What is the media teaching young girls these days
I remember when I was five I was watching Sesame Street and Loony-Tunes
Not watching Entertainment tonight
Where they say "If your thin, you're beautiful"
When did that rule come into effect?
Last time I checked people came in all shapes and sizes
And are beautiful just the way they are
Now girls are dropping like flies
Just to be this so called "beautiful"
Well I for one don't think that being a living skeleton
Or laying in a wooden box is very beautiful at all
But according to the media
You have to be thin and wear whats "in" to be popular
Thirteen year olds are dressing like whores
Selling themselves short
For who they really are
And what they really are is
Worth way more than those cheep words
That get thrown at at them
now teen pregnancy is on the rise
Because to have morals is "uncool"
And self esteem gets torn away
Like the cloths you threw out yesterday
Just because they weren't in style today
Strip away the mask of foundation
And look at the stranger in the mirror
Embrace every blemish, every small "flaw"
Because thats what makes you a snowflake
In the world of ashes
Never forget that true beauty lies within
Be who you are
And never lose yourself.
Author notes
Hey my AP name is Little-Kiowa, I've written 46 poems and I'm 17...Umm this is my newest piece...The writers block is finally over, YES!!! I've taken a political stance since the last time I've written...so hopefully you enjoy getting smacked in the face with reality. This is option #4, ya know...the important issue one...Its about anorexia and how its still affecting girls and how its affecting younger girls as well ...it's still a major issue in the US
Oh yeah..."I love poetry!"

I completely agree. the media is training us to think of ourselves as ugly so they can make more money in the make-up world. Our entire country revolves around money and we don't even care that we're hurting the adolescence of our world! Sorry, had to get that out there. Your poem triggered a common rant of mine. It's a senstive topic for me. Anyways, for the critiscism side I think that stanza number two and four should be broken up. they're a bit overwhelming right now. Readers like short stanzas. helps the flow. And for the positive note, I really like your choice of issue (if you couldn't tell) and I like your wording. you're addressing the reader directly, which pulls them into the poem and makes them feel involved. Well done
