We’ve tried for far too long
To fix too many things gone too wrong
And the melancholy beat of my chest
As it heaves and pants to survive,
not being by your side
is not a comfort on the warm, sticky nights.
So lie down on the soft bed,
Let the pillow cradle your head
Like a lover’s lap on a summer afternoon.
Let the heartbreak wait until morning.
I want to know
I need to know
How the fireflies could defy the stars,
And the light from your eyes could outshine the cars
On nights when your lips
Were the only thing worth knowing
And your hands were the only hands worth holding.
So late at night
When you lie in your soft, blue bed
I ask,
How is it?
And you respond:
A little lonely.
I smile and nostalgically
Trace my finger around your photo framed face
For a moment I can’t recall
Why we ever said goodbye at all.

Sad when two people split apart and don't really know why. Been happily married for many years so I don't ever want to feel this. I saw my sister a fellow poet have her heart broke this way and I am still trying to help her recover. Excellent poem.

this is true...the heart doesn't realize its missing something until that something is gone
