Author notes

A special thanks to RichardYuman for allowing me to use this photograph. Normally, I use my own...... but this one... what an amazing shot. Thanks so much Richard. Please feel free to use it on your author page as well.... if you like. Sorry the poem has sad implications..... but that's what called to me when I saw it.

    Touching

This is really beautiful. I'm not sure what to say really, but I love your collection "Photoku". Although you say that the photo isn't yours, it was truly touchful and the words were sad. Great piece. Take care, Kate

Thanks Serenity....... I'm glad you popped in on me to read this. I had forgotten about this one.... it was neat to come back to it and remember the thoughts I was having when I wrote it.

How sad. Before the picture fully loaded, all I could see was the deer. It early made me start crying, it was so sad. But your words added so much extra meaning to the poem. I absolutely loved it. Peace be with you.

I knew you would make something beautiful from this photo - and indeed you have - images haunt in a way words cannot - yet combined with the right words are seared into the mind - a beautiful write and use of photography

This haiku has sadded me..Perfect job as it has definetly captured my attention.. It makes me think of not only the snow falling and coldness of winter but of hunters and the motherless fawn.but thats what I grasp from it.I am new to Haiku so each time I read one I learn something new..Thank you so much for sharing..

    nice piece

This is so beautiful and sad, very touching photo, and great words to go with it. But maybe there's some happy here afterall, maybe the dear is waiting for the friendly homeowners to get home so they can give him some food and pet him like they always do. Hopefully.

    LOVELY AND INSIGHTFUL

That's sad and yet beautiful, to me. The little deer should be with his/her mama ): Poor little thing, and yet it's quite beautiful, the words, and the picture.

I miss ya, Monk Man, especially the hugssies. But I promise I will be back very soon, with a vengeance! And tell M. Bucky hi and I miss all you guys. I think I should start sending out a newsletter like Sylvia, I'm gone so much lately!
    Love, Kerry

    wild animals are rarely homeless
many can, amazingly, adapt to the conditions
    we have forced upon them
like most people, seeing this photo
    and reading the words
    my heart felt heavy
yet it also reminded me that there are human children out there
who do not have the same ability to adapt
who do not have humane societies and wildlife societies
would that we gave as much of our time, money and energy
    to helping them

sorry don, for some reason i'm on my soap box this evening

this definitely turns the emotional valve - quite a bit going on in the picture (the animal, nature in general, winter etc..) - I think you did a fantastic job blending your words with Richard's photo - Great work Don ~ Peace, Brian

The picture is a hyku in it selves. The second (yours)almost overdone but with its own beauty.

This haiku makes people aware off the big needs everywhere around us. Not only by animals but also by men.

Wonderful photograph and Haiku.I live less than a mile from our local wildlife center which provides a temporary home for injured or orphaned wildlife, includlng pelicas, herons, egrets, eagles, racoons and at least one fawn. When I was more active I was a volunteer doing vartous chores including cage cleaning, feeding even hand crushing aluminum cans,a revenue source. They now have an electric powered crusher. Most of the wildlife is cured and released back to nature. If they cannot survive in nature they remain in the center. One resident for many years, recently deceased, was a talking crow with only one functioning wing.Tne center is adjacent to a county park and is quite an attraction.Think I'll vtsit tomorrow.

    Enjoyed your poem as usual.Bill

    Superb!

The poignant ambiguity is heart-clutching! The image is so immediately perceived (anthropomorphized) as simply 'a baby, cold and alone'... Wonderful photo! Perfect Haiku!

This is a great combo-the picture shows such an adorable animal looking so sad and lonely, yet at the same time, in a strange way, kind of comfortable, and possibly even content. Which really gives the person looking at it something to think about.
The poem is very well-written, and the combo is just perfect.
    Great piece.

I like the pic, usually don't when it comes to certain pieces (even my own tho I haven't used a pic yet on any poem of mine this year) and the haiku goes well with it.

A good piece that you have written here.

I agree - this is definitely a heart-rending site. Poor little guy. Any idea why he is alone? He even seems to be a little sick. Hopefully, he was just napping. Your haiku captured the shot perfectly, as usual.

I hope your new year is going well so far!

Both picture and poem combine to make a very hard hitting piece, I wish I'd seen this a few years ago when I was working with the homeless. (people) This combination would make a good support poster. One thing I came to realise whilst working with the homeless is how alone you can be, when all you have is yourself, all the aid in the world can give you a house, but it can't give you a place in the world.

    An Earth moving piece.

    Perfect

THis is a wonderful Haiku, I now want to find this little ones mother. The stairs in this photo is what in my mind makes the vision so lonely. I think if it where in a field embraced by a meadow of mother earths arms it would be an intirely different Haiku. Awesome job, I look forward to reading more of your work.

An author's note: it's weird how sometimes, even in a crowd, you can feel lonely. Here, in nature's embrace (nature being quite a crowd) there is a forlorn feeling and loneliness present with this little soul.
