Between a Goddess and a Freak

Silver hands cup cradled strands of moods, let loose the chaotic night

and yet I pause, to choose between such silk

and matted straw…

Do I need the guarantee that flowing silk may bring to me?

Or is the challenge of matted straw what really matters, what truly brings

a fulfilling life before it ends…

Of course, the answer I cannot see, I fail to comprehend;

I’ve stood in refined company, I’ve seen the perils it may bring-

that world of hollow vanity;

shall I be a looker, weaving lies, or a doer… which, I ask, is me?

A head of golden, flowing hair, brushed a hundred thousand times

means little to one who peers beneath…

to choose a goddess or a freak…

and which, I ask, will have me?

    Your poetry always challenges the reader; it always asks questions; is always thought-provoking; always goes deeper than the surface, or in this case, as hair “brushed a thousand times” or “such silk or straw”. Actually, in this poem, the one who needs to answer the questions, is the writer himself! To me this poem is about more than hair – it’s the eternal battle within between good and evil, between the physical and the spiritual/emotional – the choices we are faced with everyday. I was just wondering if “a goddess and a freak”….surely there are others…? I liked your take on the prompt – it’s different, and speaks on both a personal and a universal level. Oh yes, choose between "style and substance".... no, I'm looking for both

    Thank you for this entry.

      yes, you are right, to challenge and create contemplation and inspiration are my natural tendencies... the romance is fun, too... though that takes a toll!
