The first thing I see
when I close my eyes
is darkness.
And then, in the darkness,
not fireworks or glitter
but clouds
hazy clouds of colored light.
And maybe if I watch long enough
they'll pull apart
or press together
giving the impression
of a bird in flight-
no, now its a flower-
a whale that swims-
and shifts-
into a dolphin, mid-leap.
Or maybe,
if I watch a little longer
they'll follow the paths
of real clouds
and I will see
the birth of a storm.
But the clouds
keep moving
so dizzingly
that I close my eyes
tighter
Until the clouds fade away
and all that's left
is the darkness.
And if I stay
in that darkness
behind my lids
soon all I can see
is my own terror.
