Denise Drive. Troy, Mi. 1991

Missing image
Goulash & knitted blankets.
A cellar that went on forever.
Lilac bush big as a shed & in full bloom.
God, the smells.
My Uncle's Siberian Husky 'Jenna'?
Lived all year out back.
The most beautiful dog ever.
Loneliest crystal blue eyes you've ever seen.

The squirrels would piss her off
something terrible during those
hot sticky buzzing summers.
Staying just out of reach,
but then, with no warning,
my uncle would come out back
with a 22 rifle & a foot long hot dog
hangin' out of his mouth and...

CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!

Silence

Smoke

Wisps
...

Thud,
slight bounce with twitch,
Then, the dog was on it
As he slid shut the screen door.
And went back to the basement.
