I've sunk deep enough that the water is calm
but I still can remember the white water surface
High above where the water drips frozen from snow
and I, a mere leaf, trapped in time since last fall
I found myself drifting, tossed by the currents
and where the water falls I took wings for a moment
Seeing all the world as it is meant to be seen
brief glimpses of life from the flow of a stream
I keep strong the memories of my short life
even as I feel myself passing away
Absorbed by the mud, held sticky to the bed
this stream where I'm destined to take my last rest
I know I was given more than most autumn leaves
but this gift is bittersweet now that I understand
I pass my life on to the cycle of time
and one day, another may rise in my form
But are my thoughts destined to be forgotten?
Or will they one day be received as well?
I would pass better knowing that something lives on
more than the cold clay of death
Until then, I can only remember and dream
Author notes
I started this out as just another "drowning poem", but decided to twist it and make it not so cliche. Still somewhat depressing, but more pondering than anything.

Another trophy added for your sea of green, good job!
'I've sunk deep enough that the water is calm
but I still can remember the white water surface'
This reminds me of last September when I went to California. We went to the beach every day, and sometimes I would just wait until a wave was coming and go under it. It was so calm under there, then a wave would press me to the ocean floor, roll along my back and legs, and it would be calm again... and now I'm rambling. Silly me. Great poem, though still kind of depressing.
