Weightless above the slow-spinning world
I reach out a hand to the black
The radio speaks, but the stars call my name
I let go and drift without looking back
"Can you hear me, Major Tom?"
Ground control waits in vain for a response
for although I can hear them, crystal and clear
The name reminds me that I'll have to go back
And how could I return my feet to the ground
when I've felt the freedom of a space oddity?
Floating with only this tether to hold me
and how I ache just to let it all go
This was what I risked by stepping through that door
and I knew I may never touch earth again
But the thoughts that used to scare me
suddenly give me such peace
Maybe I was destined to end my days here
held by the universe, a part of the sky
Weightless above the slow-spinning world
I reach out a hand to the black
The radio speaks, but the stars call my name
I let go and drift without looking back

I like how you wrote the first stanza again at the end.
This is different, I don't think I've ever read a poem, by you, about an astronaut. Spiffy.
This is much cool.
