I’ve had my hair done, in secret;
pink and purple stripes
to match my black and blue poems more easily;
such tomes deserve the presentation,
think you not?
I’ve given mirror its foggy hyper-inspection
for loose nose and chin hairs,
sprongs from ears and eyebrows
and loose-canon words bouncing up and down
behind me where snickerers might see
them straying off as if to disappear,
in fear of being seen or studied
for their wandering-eye visions.
I’ve placed an order for wrist corsage,
of borage, sage, and witch’s eye
so critiques will fall beneath the spell
or be slightly immune to poet’s hell
should I not be chose, or even close,
to the implications of this nation
that I have a propensity, however vain of me,
to maybe write that one great piece;
one to be famous, not infamous, mind you,
and one that would brings gasps and gaws
like that one great stunt and shunt of daws
where you o’re-took a crooks silver marble
in front of all his friends
but just in case, my phrases droop down, like scoop
of raggedy crinoline beneath the most expensive gown,
I’ve gotten the longest cigarette holder, and Egyptian cigarettes,
and words I’ve memorized from distinguished by little-known
poets and poetesses; Gods and Goddesses in their anonymity,
and can spew a line or two, fine half-forgotten couplets,
that can not easily be examined for my flaws.
Forget the bells and wells in eyes, of losers who lost the crowning,
for I am hell-bent, and heaven-sent these words I piece together
like paint-by-number hard-backed art, and for my flair,
just here, or there, I’ve splotched a change or two
and in the judge’s eye, I’m sure I’ll spy
a twinge or wish they’d owned them
but just in case, come time and place,
beneath a garter belt made of leather, is the 'whether'.
