What had John Donne?
'Tis clear he had some fonne,
as was common in his thyme,
trying to make his verses rhyme.
Some poems of his were lyrical,
others, though, were more satirical.
Readers said he was as notable as Bacon.
Bacon disagreed, saying they were mistaken.
Against the Jesuits, Donne was forcefully polemic;
though in other works his style became strictly academic.
His lapse from Catholicism completely shocked the Vatican
when it was found that he'd deserted to join up as an Anglican.
Donne's creative life divides into three stages;
first passionate, cynical and full of fiery rages;
then, a period of anguished meditation
before, finally, his Anglican ordination.
Some may regard this as a record, far too quizzical,
of the life and times of a poet metaphysical;
but ‘tis hoped, for the rest, all that has been done
is to raise their awareness of the poet, John Donne.
