The Ghost on the Stairs

Missing image
Dedicated to all who like to be spooked!

There was an eerie cold presence, on the stairs,
Felt a chill down my spine, it rose my hairs!

Each morning at precisely eight, I was scared
The sound of footsteps coming upstairs, were heard.

The ghost of a railway worker, man,
Would come upstairs, almost to plan.

This man used to come home, every morning,
Until he was killed, leaving a wife in mourning.

The previous owners, of my house,
Moved out too scared, at this ghost's rouse.

I could time my clock, by the ghostly walk,
Though never saw him, nor did he talk.

The heavy thud, stair by stair,
Enter my bedroom, would he dare?

That un-rested ghostly spirit, me haunted,
Not really the sort of guest, I wanted.

But this was an old 1930's, family home,
Creaking floorboards, ghosts to roam.

The past was living aside the now, and future,
As if sewn together, with a karmic suture.

The ghost that haunted, that spooky staircase,
The railway man, that my home, did grace.

That eerie feeling, lingered strongly there,
Would he materialise, and be seen on the stair?

I left the house, live there no more,
But I know that man still haunts for sure.

Author notes

Many years ago I bought an old 1930's bay fronted Semi detached house in Birmingham. UK. I wondered why the house was sold so cheaply and why the occupants wanted a quick sale. Soon after I moved in I discovered that the house was haunted. The neighbour told me that prior to the previous owners the house had been occupied by a middle aged couple. He was a railway worker who was killed by a train who failed to spot him on the track, his widow moved out soon after and a young couple, from whom I had bought the house, moved in but were very frightened by ghostly footsteps on the stairs each morning. They believed this was the ghost of the railway worker who always came home off a night shift at 8am each morning. The neighbour asked if it would scare me out, I told her that it wouldn't. I left as a mysterious fire destroyed that house whilst I was working away in the USA and was unfit to return to.
