redemption song

and she said:

have you ever seen the rain
coming down
on a sunny day

but i said
you’re too young
to play that song girl
and i know that right now
you’re not crazy
just a little unwell
i can tell
by the way you
chase tornados
and sleep with
sad men

and don’t you remember
your 7th grade voice
the one that said
hold on hold on
baby hold on
things will go your way

hold on
for one more
day

but she said
there’s this pain
not in my head
but in my feet
from the smack of
his rocks
and i found myself
deleted
from god’s address book
and you know how i hate
when phones stay
silent

so i’ll just sleep
and be better off
this way

and so she drifts
until i scream
wake up and face me
don’t play dead
then maybe
i won’t walk away
saying you
fucking
disappoint me
with your tragic hair
your grieving nails
the way your words
hail on my head
like slices from a dead
sky

but your coffin
lies so pleasantly
redemption
in a little box
filled with songs of freedom
yeah
they were all you ever
had

and i must sit
on a stone bench
happy to watch your grass grow
speckled pollen
soaring
like bird bones
apologizing in some distant god’s ear
about how you tried
to hold on
hold on
for one more
day

Author notes

I was listening to Bob Marley's 'Redemption Song', her favorite of his, and thought about her...

NOTE: Some parts quoted from A Perfect Circle's 'passive' and Wilson & Phillips' 'Hold On' and Matchbox 20's 'Unwell'.

This is a rather sad ...

poem. Someone you know or used to know?

Anyway, it's a credible job. Somebody will probably publish it.

    funny how music can inspire
Marley and Santana especially for me...the freedom bell I suppose
what I liked most about the poem was coherence...it reains throughout...and I love the lil' things you do to provide brilliant images...much like a song.. Rowan says bluesy...hmmmm go figure..lol

There was such a bluesy-lyrical feel to this, I thought it had to be song inspired. But how well you did this, so beautifully done, hon.

Ohhhhh, I love all of those songs! Especially Passive and anything to do with Matchbox 20

How inspiring! Just thinking about how well I know those songs, yet the poem still flows so effortlessly. Fab
