The Ring That Heaven Sent

Missing image
I've danced with wealth and a prestigious name,
a political figure climbing his way to fame.
Elegant ballroom gowns, fine wines, champagne's and tea.
I've danced under the moonlight, on yachts upon the sea.

Crackers and caviar, though never quite my taste,
yet I pretended to savour the flavor~eating without haste.
Tailored gowns and custom suits, fitted tux and ties,
luxurious suites and tennis clubs, with many stifled sighs.

Perfect jewels, his gifts of love, precisely cut for me,
dance lessons and fashion shows...perfect I must be.
Designer clothes and Gucci totes, fashionable designer jeans
he despised my favorite Levi's, now raveled at the seams.

My most comfortable Keds, a bit too yellow around the soles,
broken in, they fit just right, and only had one tiny hole.
"My Keds and levi's are staying, you're the one who goes,
romance to you is but a price and I am just for show!"

I'm just plain old country and that's all I'll ever be,
so now my search was on for someone to love me...as me!
In my holy Keds and well worn jeans,
I met the love of my life and the man of my dreams

A masonry, he is by trade,
with calloused hands by the bricks he's laid.
A beat up truck is what he drove,
lived in a shack with an efficiency stove.

Our first meal was beanie-wienies and chips,
fishing for crappie was our first romantic trip.
He took me dancing in a redneck bar,
we dined on peanuts and bud...no caviar!

He told me he was in love soon after we met,
but I wasn't quite ready for all of that yet.
He tried to convince that we were meant to be,
still blinded by my past, this I couldn't see.

Almost a year...and we were still going strong,
it felt so right, yet I was sure it was wrong.
In the redneck bar where on the weekends we danced,
as he pulled out my chair, something "shiny" he glanced.

He said, "what is that there right beside your chair?"
I picked up the object...a golden band's what lay there.
" Now tell me dear, what more signs do you need,
a ring sent from heaven, laying right at your feet!"

I laughed at his joke as I tried the band on,
and replied, " Well my dear, God got my size wrong."
You see this ring was way too large...
yet, the next words he said captured my heart.

"Honey he made it larger to give our love room to grow,
rings falling from heaven, and still you don't know!
Well soon after that, it was on Christmas Eve,
a beautiful diamond engagement ring is what I received.

Our wedding was planned and we soon set the date,
yet a month before the wedding you won't believe my fate!
I was on my way to work very early one morn,
my ring finger was injured very broken and torn.

A painful surgery was now required,
my shattered bones were pinned and wired.
Now bruised and swollen, my  engagement ring cut,
I insisted we post-pone, and my husband said "but...

wait just one moment", he said happily....,
then returned with the band from heaven, made just for me!
As he placed it on my finger, his handsome face glowed,
it fit perfect now...filled by love that still grows.

Author notes

True story...after a bitter divorce, I dated many charming men...the most miserable affair was the one with the most money. Money can't buy happiness or love. After meeting the love of my life, it was still hard to trust my heart. The car accident happened on Sept. 3, our wedding was planned for Oct. 16, there was no way the swelling would be down enough for my set to fit.
Both my ring finger and pinky finger were crushed on my left hand. I'd forgotten about the ring that we'd found that
was "sent from heaven and way too big", but my hubby remembered and retrieved it, and just as he said...God made it big to give our love room to grow, and this was the ring that he placed on my finger at our wedding.

(I know this is long, perhaps a novel...just dq if too long for your contest)

    Wonderful!

wait just one moment", he said happily....,
then returned with the band from heaven, made just for me!
As he placed it on my finger, his handsome face glowed,
it fits perfect now...filled by love that still grows.

This is a very passionate stanza. I can see the imagery and feel the creativity you put into this. Congrats on the gold and good luck!
