Among cascading cheers and whistles, I
Feel so important throwing leather balls,
The drunken crowd's shouts bounce against the sky,
While misaimed urine splashes in the stalls.
Loud, crappy songs from twenty years ago
Still play on lo-fi speakers, also old.
And, lest the crowd becomes a little slow,
The scores are brightly lit, the story told.
I, laughing, cash my bloated checks with glee,
The roll I earn for jumping like an ape,
My games, so crucial to our destiny,
Won't crumble 'fore we make our grand escape;
For, once the crowds awaken, and depart,
Well, what were we but shells with little heart?

Aaah, vacuous entertainment; coupled with religion as the opiates of the masses, we slowly become more and more easily distracted from the true functions of the world at lar--OH MY GOD KITTY!

excellent...the terrible truth
Oh, thank you. I have often thought professional sports just missed the whole point of what sports were supposed to be about. I never could conjure up the fervor necessary to overlook the brutality of football....and, though I enjoy the subtleties of baseball, I am insulted by the earnings of many of the players, and the way in which the public and media are ready to defend the elite professional players against any charge of criminal behavior. We have a warped perspective on things in our nation when the salary of one wife-beating professional athlete could fund two shelter programs for a year, and yet....the shelters are forced to close their doors for lack of funding...and the abusive athlete's criminal fines are bemoaned as "unfair" by the media...while their victims are castigated and blamed and berated as liars. ooops....pardon me....my soapbox was showing. Thanks so much for this (obviously!) highly evocative poem.
