Nicotine

it's a half burned
cigarette, the part
enjoyed most

a filthy habit,
one I can't break,
ash all I have
in the pores of skin

I reach for it
over and again,
preferring lingering death
of subtle addictions

you burn like wood,
scarred, torn;
buried in bark

and underneath,
sap, the soft pliable kind,
wrapping fingers around,
feel it sink into my palm

sweet,
tender to the tongue,
an aftertaste
of colored bulbs
dipped in soil

fine tobacco leaves
I inhaled to spit you up,
regurgitation akin to love
allow me to swallow you
in the smoke

    ...what a metaphor!

  • "the part
    enjoyed most"
LMAO, interesting in how it relates to a cigarette (absolutely disgusting, but tasty as a metaphor)

"preferring lingering death of subtle addictions"
    Nice. Really nice.

    "buried in bark"
    I likey.

"an after taste of colored bulbs dipped in soil"
AWESOME imagery and just...very cool. Makes me think deeper about the meaning. Should be 'aftertaste' though...since it's one word. (:

"I inhaled to spit you up
    Yowza. I like.

"allow me to swallow you in the smoke"
    Full-blown and wonderful...

As for your AN...well, no comment apart from this one. (:

This poem is outstanding... so very descriptive, and powerful imagery to boot. I love it. ~ Kerri
