The Lack Thereof

Have you ever checked the obituaries
to see if old lovers have died?
Some have fifty-year wedding
anniversaries coming up
as their quality of life is going down.
Some were drunks and playboys,
getting it on , wham bam
thank you ma’am!
When I chance to catch a glimpse
Of the derelicts they have become
with their dentures and sagging jowls
...I have to smile.
They don’t recognize me anymore,
so I can drift among them and
check out what life has done to them
without their knowing.
Remembering those back seat trysts
Pounding me into the door panel,
hating it all, now that I remember.
Imagining now their wheezing breath
as their old bodies strain to force blood
into their limp members even after
the little blue diamonds have failed.
Admitting disappointment in sex
Doesn’t bother me at all
...Life goes on
What urges I might have had
have been zapped by medication
as my hair thinned and fell out
and my joints swelled and twisted.
Should they recognize me
they would say, what the hell
happened to her!
Life is what happens.
In future years you will become
one of those sad old people
reading the obituaries,
...while life goes on.

I really like this, and I think you hit the nail directly on the head - you are so right, life happens and thats really okay too.

I think it's sad, that the only time some older people dress up and go out, is to a funeral of one of their friends.

    "Imagining now their wheezing breath
as their old bodies strain to force blood
into their limp members even after
the little blue diamonds have failed."

It is quite truthful on my part, you would laugh to hear the story of my last encounter..I will save that for another time. I am glad that I can laugh about it now.
