he bought drugs
to still his tremble
thus he gave her grief
she rejected it
and hoped
he might
live another day
and maybe find
a way to better life
she knew
that gifts with
strings attached are
simply business deals
now he gives
without expectation
because she showed him how

Of course, another alternative would be not to have anything to do with this person. But perhaps he is her son so that would be difficult.
"gifts with strings attached are simply business deals" It's hard being at the receiving end because you feel you should be giving in return. Not quite you are talking about perhaps but I find the whole giving/receiving dynamic really fascinating.
Excellent write because you raise these questions.
