Berlin: summer, 1980

The urban German sprawl quickly cooled as

it gladly threw off the heat of the day

like a toddler, shedding clothing

wanting to run free and naked.

A throwaway plastic cup tumbled

across the station platform, onto the tracks

caught by a stiff breeze from the train

that sped past.

The next one was mine

several minutes away yet.

A young couple is necking on a bench

overhead fluorescent lights are flickering

the strobe effect catches them with an

odd illumination, their passionate advances

seem almost robotic.

The smell of half eaten schnitzels and stale beer

wafts from a garbage can beside me

as I turn again, the necking couple is gone

stumbling up the steps, laughing

still engaged in amorous pleasantries

and I was thinking of the underground clubs

further down town and how I was to be

entertained by

the counter-culture with their raucous Iggy Pop

Clash gyrations and of course, the beer, I liked

German beer, always fresh and tasty but

very filling and speaking of filling…

my bladder is about to burst so, I duck down

the stairs, leading off the platform to relieve myself

in the dark, as my train arrives and I miss it…

because of a much needed piss, “Shit!”

Prompt: "Sometimes you just have to

The content of this piece was taken from the deep dusty archives of my memory, kind of 'prosey' but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.

( this made me giggle. )

it reads so smoothly, and the descriptive imagery is to die for!

The smell of half eaten schnitzels and

You always have a way of bringing the reader to where you are, and showing them around

    You're great. x

LOL. How amusing. You centered an entire, brilliant poem, off of that one quote??? You are too much!!!

    Thanks for the enjoyable read.

The scene is rich with the realness of life, those train and bus schedules will always be on time when we need just a few minutes for relieving ourselves. I am reminded of a young cousin in potty training as she repeated the need to go "pee! pee! pee!" and when she let go, she said "aw shit!" as I smile in remembering and smile at your angst.

    Dammit!! Missing the train!

You always have such fascinating stories to tell my friend! This is no different... I enjoyed it immensely!

    Prose perhaps.. but always poetic!

What a wonderful take on the prompt! You set a scene, bring the reader in by painting a mood with smells, color and motion then you let us feel the irritable urge at the end making the whole thing human. Wonderful!
