Words

As far back as I can remember
          there have been words
      rolling like the plains,
like wheat, blowing in the wind,
peaking like snow-capped mountains
          reaching for the stars.
        Words, trilling,
like the lark trills in early morning,
      babbling like the brook,
        glowing flame red
          at sunset.
Words, making promises of love,
singing the sweet song of regret,
        strumming the blues beat,
          and the soulful dance.
Behind my weary eyes,
      they are there still,
          tracing the pulse,
flowing like blood in my veins,
keeping time with the heartbeat,
      cadence, with every breath.
As long as words and I exist,
      there’ll be no death.

Author notes

I truly love this, and it holds such truth. You use bold and flavorful words that entice the reader along, but in an understandable and comprehensible manner. Nice job!
