Some Birthday Advice: The Only Present I Have To Give

Dear Alyssa Caitlin,

I remember when I was fifteen,
It was only three years ago.
I was only a sophomore,
And a happy one too.

But I'll give you some advice,
Take it from the college-bound girl,
Who only graduated this past May.

Be careful with your money,
College IS expensive.
Get a job when you can,
Save most of your wages,
And just keep pushing through.

Challenge yourself,
Do the best you can.
It can get you some scholarships...
That means free money if you win.

Keep your imagination alive,
It can serve you well:
In times of despair,
And in times of happiness.

Keep your personality in check,
The first thing employers will look at
After your outfit will be
YOUR personality.

Volunteer time.
It can help you gain skills needed for a job.
Need 6 months experience?
Volunteer!

I won't say the traditional
Happy Birthday
Because you've heard it for fourteen years,
Doesn't it seem a bit worn out?

I'll give you life's welcome instead.
You're growing up, and that means:

Freedoms
Responsibilities
Interests
Extra problems in life and
Sound judgement is required.

Now, would you like "FRIES" with that?

Author notes

Happy Birthday, Alyssa.

Just some advice from a girl about your age. It gets harder from here.
