Eccentric Erik the half-a-Scot

Have you heard about old Erik Satie?
He was quite slim and not un fatti;
Son père was a Frog, his Ma a wee Jock
(which must have given quite a shock
to his musical chums at the Conservatoire
where he wrote "Trois morceaux en forme de poire").

While sitting 'au piano' one fine day
At his Honfleur home so bright and gay,
Our Erik felt himself come over queer,
(le résultat triste de beaucoup de bière).
He hadn't felt so odd since he didn't know when
(that's when he wrote his "Gnossiennes").

Now I don't want you to think Erik was bent
That certainly wasn't what I meant;
But there's no doubt he was a little odd
(indeed many called him an asexual sod);
For, although French, he loved not the ladies
(and he also wrote three nice "Gymnopédies").

Many piano pieces which Satie penned
Are rather silly and round the bend;
One was called "Prélude for a Dog"
(I think he wrote whilst sur le bogue);
Perhaps his best known work is called "Parade"
Which some people think is quite avant-garde.

He was a bit potty and collected umbrellas
Which set him apart from saner fellers;
He had lots of velvet suits to his name
(and for some reason, they all looked the same).
But he over-did it on the booze, was often pissed,
Thus he died prematurely, and is sorely missed.

Author notes

Erik Satie 1866-1925. Composer, heavy boozer and eccentric.

For the linguistically challenged: "trois morceaux en forme de poire" = "three pear-shaped pieces of music".

    Qui a écrit ce merveilleux petit poème? Je pense que peut-être Mme Gentil-amour qui ont écrit ce petit chef-d'œuvre.

    Extremely well informed. Ce sera difficile à battre. I am the proud owner of a "trois morceaux en forme de poire" T-shirt.

    An inspired rhyme between ladies and Gymnopédies, if I may say so.

    Speaking of round the bend pieces (or les loonie tunes, as the French might put it) I particularly like d'Holothurie in Embryons desséchés, in which the Holothuria sings a little song from the ocean bed.

    Qu'est-ce qu'un mec, ce qui absolument incroyable un mec!

    Tremendous entry, comme l'actrice réputée dit à l'évêque!

      I am honoured to win a goldie from you, Keith, I was much gentler than usual with this poem. I actually like Satie. I remember going to see the Royal Ballet do Gnossiennes et Gymnpedies at the ROH in the 70s and I was so overcome with lust for the dancers I had to give myself one off the wrist in the 1st interval. Fortunately I spilled none on my skirt.
