They Stood And Smiled

They moved to the left
he went to the right
they in tune to the music
he was way out of step
the audience began to laugh
then stood to their feet
they knew all about him
and they couldn't resist
so they all clapped

He was autistic
they hadn't seen him perform
it was hard for him to learn
and he had trouble being in a crowd
but tonight was different
his mother took a chance
entered him in mime dance
where it didn't matter that
they spoke softly
while he spoke loud

Three days training
that is all they got
to learn the steps as a group
nobody thought that he could
and maybe
as they stood and smiled
and clapped and...
forgot about their own child
they should have all remembered
he might not have been perfect
but with God's help, he would

This is unlike any other entry in this contest. I think it's amazing that it's a true story, so well done to you both for breaking the mould set by society. It's a fantastic achievment to overcome something like that. I think you told the story well in a gentle and heartwarming poem. Thanks for entering.
