love and fortune cookies

the over zealous waiter

(expecting a fat tip)
gave us more than we needed;
i slipped two in my pocket for

later

the red shiny foil
enticed at tea time today;
i gave you one and
opened mine

it was empty,
devoid of fable, fortune
or promise of fun filled anythings

yours said:

"the secret to a rich life is to have more beginnings than endings"

i smiled:

thinking the end is near...

    oh, o'er zelous writers. i 'oft wonder at the ones whom come up wi' the sayin's fer fortune cookies. if i were so privalaged to make fortunes fer random strangers they would be thing s like, 'a beach ball can be found on the beach... so can beached whales. ye are in the wrong place... ' hmm, mayhap 'tis a good thing i doonae write.

    in seriousness though, is an odd mix o' sadness and relief when that moment o' understandin' comes, that even though things work, ye can ne'er avoid that moment.. where there is knowlege o' an enevitable end... fer whate'er reason that might be...

    och, once again, ye've managed to touch hidden paths in this lasses hear... evera word, as light as it might seem, weighs heavily as a cloud pregnant wi' rain...

    such a different poem that has the empty fortune cookie with us feeling like you got "robbed" and then the ending having us wondering if that really was to be the irony that fate dealt: simply having that feeling of the end being near.

    Really though, how much credit do we really want to give to a cookie being sold to us in asian restaurants that was made for the first time in a "little China" city in the U.S. to add novelty to the dine-out Chinese experience? I only eat them to add "in bed" to the end of each and see if it's worth a smirk or two.

    Cool poem really. There's a lot to like about something unique as this poem that gets a smile out of us.

    This is superb, Elaine. While we all laugh off the little superstitions - the daily horoscopes, our star-sign profiles, the fortune cookie messages, we secretly want them to tell us good things ( not that we'd believe them, you understand, just for the fun of it ... ).

    I can soooo feel the sinking sensation generated by the combination of your 'blank', and the gentleman's 'more beginnings' forecast.

    The smile, I'd imagine, was a somewhat inscrutable one...!

    Fine poetry, indeed.
    Sometimes are fortunes really are, fortunate.
    Love this as a poetic example..

    I once had a fortune cookie that said, 'eat more take out food.'

    I think I would have preferred just to get the cookie, except the story is too damn funny.

    Love this

    Actually, I find this piece a little perturbing (in a good way). The idea of being devoid of fortune while another is rich with beginnings. A very well written and though evoking poem

    I love the open-endedness of this and the fortune cookie devoid of anything.

    This one made me smile too, Elaine.
    What a lovely piece of writing... so many nuances in this fortune cookie!
