"But Daddy...!"

Missing image
We were at the grocery check-out line,
my youngest child was five.
As my husband paid the cashier,I observed my
daughter picking her nose, again.
She always did this in public, at home,
anywhere and all the time!

I had many talks with her about this bad display of
manners, all to no avail.
Well on this day as I watched her dig her
tiny finger into her nose in search of hidden
buggers, I popped her hand away from her nose.

She let out a loud, shrill, dying kind of cry.
Now everyone's attention was directed towards us.
My husband turns his focus to me and gently picks
her up, trying to console her crying.
He asked her what she had been punished for.

My daughter replied, "mommy spanked me for picking my nose",
my husband replied, "you know that's not nice, and you
shouldn't do it."  My daughter said, loudly, as she was
still angry, " But daddy, you pick your nose all the time
and you never get a spanking!"

With a red face and beads of sweat, my husband turned to me
and said, "finish up, I'm taking her out of here!"
Though he is my ex-husband now, and that grocery store no
longer exists, I don't recall him ever shopping there again...and of course he never picked his nose in my presence, just in front of the kids, I guess.

    So very true

Mine are approaching forty and I still feel I need to set a good example for them.
