Laura Serrano

Laura Serrano’s spirit is set free;
Buffeted by the thin Andean winds.
Below, Paremo is all she can see.
The breeze picks up, rapture begins.

Far away from the familiar flock,
And their pressing conformity.
Laura flies over tussock and rock;
Viewing Altisana’s enormity.

In flight, she’s happy and carefree
It is inner wisdom that she seeks.
She understands to a degree
The silly squawks from other beaks.

Below is the spectacular montane;
A snow-capped, jagged volcanic tor;
Sweeping vistas, glacial moraine;
Could a gull ever ask for more?

High Colta Lake is icy and cold;
Above, Altiplano is capped in white.
When flock life starts to get old
She will soar anew in glorious flight.

Author notes

This is inspired by the prompt:

Franz Schubert, Serenade
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpA0l2WB86E

The classical music reminded me of a bird in flight and also of Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

Laura Serrano is a play on the the latin name for the Andean Gull (larus serranus). This black headed white gull is found in the alpine nature reserve around the Altiplano volcano in Ecuador.

    You've done well in giving flight to Laura in your words as she dances to Franz Schubert, Serenade.
    Best of luck

    • I am glad you enjoyed it. Ultimately, I had a great time with the prompt and the poem. The music was serene and just called out for me to write this poem.
  • Hello.

    This has a very serene fragile feel to it, with your words creating the image well with good detail. I have to say this poem speaks to me as the other one did, and it is revolving round the same thing, for although the music spoke to you, it is you who speaks for the bird, and are the bird. A sentient being tired of the life around them and indeed one he himself is in, for this bird can not show their true beauty due to the imposed restrictions that come from staying within the flock. But staying in the flock has shown that it is not wisdom that guides them, but the bird in front of their beak, and if the first bird is blind as a bat, then they all in essence are, unless they question themselves. The silly squawks adds to this hypothesis.

    Also it is interesting that in flight he is happy and carefree for not only are the shackles off, and a chance to get away from the others, but this would be the state that the bird is at their most natural; brain switched off, just being in the moment. Well that is how I interpreted it.

    You have also given me an idea for a contest, which I thank you for.

    My regards.

    • Thank you for reading and commenting. You fully understood the poem as I intended it. For something I dreaded doing it came out ok. Your comment as well as others have been uplifting.

      Please let me know if you post the contest. I would love to give it a crack.

    This is lovely. You could have been inspired by an OBE. It is like you speak from something deeper. Love classical music as well. Great choice of inspiration!

    • I don't know how much I like being deep. I agreed to this before I fully understood the rules. Once I did, and was given a classical music prompt I groaned out loud. .... No words.

      I cleared my mind and watched the images that accompanied the prompt. The course that this poem would take became absolutely clear.

      I am glad you enjoyed it.

    Wonderful...wonderful...wonderful

    This is the stuff that I will read to my children.
    When you write like this it seems something deeper speaks through you.

    • I am glad you enjoyed the poem. I give a nod to both Jonathan Livingston Seagull and Franz Schubert on this one.

      I don't know about depth... at least not on a regular basis. I write about anything and everything.
  • The imagery you create here is just beautiful but with the music it is magnificent. I still feel like i'm soaring...just beautiful.
    Good luck in the contest!

    • It was funny. When I reserved, I thought I was supposed to pick a song. Then when I re-read it I had some dread as to what song would be selected. It was worse than I thought, it was classical music. I was horrified.

      After I listened to it. It was so serene. I knew exactly the direction that I wanted to go with it.

      Thanks for reading and commenting.

    Your words fit the music prompt so beautifully, I felt uplifted and able to fly among the images that were presented to me.

    All the best in the contest...Sue

    • Thanks. That is the feeling that I was going for. I tend to tell stories like a reporter. It can inhibit me when I try to write something like this.

      I am glad you enjoyed it.

    Beauty in Heights

    It does seem that this Gull has a fine eye that she would see the serenity in the scenery and what spectacle the earth does provide.

    If man could truly fly and one day look at this here planet perhaps we could all feel uplifted and "will soar anew in glorious flight."

    I like it, I like it so!

    • Thank you. The photo montage supplied with the Schubert piece reminded me of a bird flying over landscape. It is a beautiful piece.
  • I love the play-on-words. This whole thing was lovely, very creative, cute, and playful... I thoroughly enjoyed the read! Well done, and good luck in the contest!
