Running

What does the past mean to me if it's already gone but

...lingers

...and lingers

Until it makes my future look bleek
And my mind being so weak
I'm trying to run from the inevitable
But I still taste darkness in the air
To the point where it's almost edible

Why do I insist to run a race I can't win
In the stubborn skin I'm in
It's like my mind is at the glourious finish line
But my soul is just starting to begin....

Begining to heal and slowly mend
The emotions within
That minds logic can never comprehend

...comprehend...

That's it, I need to comprehend my past
Instead of running from it like a coward

Even though those battles are done
The war has just begun
I need to confront who I was
With what I've become

...confront...

That's it, I need to confront the inevitable

Instead of taking steps back I need to stride towards
These future battles which makes this incredible war

I need to transform from a boy to a man
I need to understand
That my past did not create my future problems

...

It created who I am

Author notes

This is my first poem in a while so I just did a free verse poem, free verses usally don't rhyme and I really tried not to but rhyming for me just comes out natrually, I can't help it.

I think "bleek" is spelled "bleak".

I enjoyed the stubborn skin line, though felt that, generally speaking, some of the imagery here was a bit cliched, or more telling than showing, such as in the line "Instead of taking steps back I need to stride towards".

(I hit the durn submit button before I was finished, so had to come back and edit this comment)

So, anyway, as I was saying.... though some of the imagery is cliched, or the story here tells rather than shows, I felt the sincerity in the piece and can deeply appreciate the sentiments you worked to express here. Thanks for entering.
