Could I?

Did I see you in the bar down Gibson Street?
Was it you taking extra shots of brandy with your cocktails?
Or perhaps I am mistaken in what I think I saw for it may have been in fact my own reflection.

Was your car parked outside the strip club Saturday Night?
Was it you they threw out just after the fight,
or did I remember things the wrong way once again?

My memory is not what it used to be,
my hair is grey and thin
yet inside the fire still burns brightly,
If you like I'll let you in?

Having met in such confusion,
should we stop and start again,
Could you meet me once when the sunlight’s in the sky?
Or perhaps you think it better,
to maybe drop off a letter
explaining no and perhaps the reasons why.

Don't ask that I respect you in the morning,
ask only that I may recall your name
We could blame the fact perhaps we had been drinking,
yet at our age we should really have no shame.

Your eyes still sparkle as diamonds
as the moonlight bathes the shore
I could walk in the path of your sandy guidance
even worship and adore.

But for now lest not be carried away,
by the excitement of how I think
Won’t you please just come and sit a while,
and let me buy the drink.
