Langston Hughes

He too sang America
Tall, black and proud
He too sang America
Not quiet, but loud

He sang with such passion
Without fear or shame
Calling the Irish, the Indian,
The black and the lame

Reject the greedy who grab and scheme!
Cast off your shackles and claim the ring
Stand and demand your American Dream
Take back this land of freedom and sing

The only time I remember hearing the name Langston Hughes is during the song "La Vie Bohem" from the musical "RENT". But now I know who he was thanks to your poem. I thank you poet. Good Luck in the contest.

    Welcome to AllPoetry

This is a very hopeful poem and I hope someone does find inspiration in it. I really liked the "Cast off your shackles and claim the ring" line, that one is a good image with great symbolism. Good luck in the contest.

    Very Good

This is an inspirational poem, a fine piece of work. While working as a busboy Hughes encountered the poet Vachel Lindsay. Impressed with the poems Hughes showed him, Lindsay publicized his discovery of a new black poet, although Hughes had already been published and was well on his way to recognition by this time. (in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langston_Hughes). If this poem isn't a finalist, or even the winner, I'll eat something unusual, well done.

      Thank you!

Thank you for the pat on the back. Hughes was the 1st one to come to mind when the theme met the challenge in my mind. In particular his poem, "I Too Sing America." I was in high school when I first encountered his work. I had a good teacher who added a section of "black poetry" to the (white)poetry segment of English class.

      Thank you again. Carma
