Song of the Sphinx

Those who come to me
Do not wish for me,
Do not love me,
Do not care for me.
And so, I kill them:

One
By one
And then some more.

But you don't really care either.

I do not kill them all,
For it is their choice
To live or die.
They make their choice
When they answer my call.

Those who come to me
Think they can best me,
Think they can steal from me,
Think they can answer me.
And so, I kill them:

One
By one
And then some more.

But you don't really care either.

They choose to live or die
By answering my call
But many answer wrong.
They answer my call;
When they're wrong, they cry.

You now come to me
Not wanting my riddle,
Not wanting wrong answers,
Not wanting death.
And so, I killed you all:

One
By one
And then some more.

But you don't really care either.

Author notes

Contest entry for Amazira, who wanted a dark poem from the perspective of a monster.
I immediately chose the Sphinx because I had been one in an RP last week and was in a riddle mood.

I love riddles beyond normality, and so I love the sphinx. A great poem. Well done. I am tall when I am old, short in old age, with life I do glow, your breath is my foe. Message me if you figure it out.

Mama always told me not to mess with the Sphinx, but I totally adore the legends and movies. I enjoyed your 1st person viewpoint, grand and soooo coldly cruel. Great work!

Thank you! I love the Sphinx, too - When they want to kill you, you die, but they give a choice to tell you a riddle in order to pass. They seem so proud, even when their riddle is defeated. Such good sports in legends!

    Riddle me this!

"What becomes smaller the more that you fill it? Answer quickly and answer well. If you fail, prepare to meet tooth and claw. Human flesh is quite tasty and I have not fed recently." I like your piece. I like the sphinx. I thank you for an entry that is worth at least two reads.
