The first step is a flawless yet unoriginal base,
waiting, yearning to be made whole by his hands.
Then comes the primer to ready the painting,
as he readies the brush to bring life to the lands.
One swipe and it's as if the world were on fire,
a brilliant shade of azure blue coats the sky.
Then deep shades of green form grass and trees,
and warm brown tones form the earth where roots lie.
No minutes, no hours, but days pass by, into weeks,
and still the artist paints and hardly ever speaks.
A few more touches, for nothing can ever be perfect,
though he can get hauntingly close, he likes impurity.
And he washes his hands of the mixed colors he used
and layers a protective coating over the world carefully.
He watches and waits for the painting to dry,
patient and undemanding as the layers slowly form
a finished product, once plain and dull,
now a masterpiece that only he could transform.
And still, long after the finishing of his work, he sits
watching the earth, his canvas, and his work never quits.
